Hi Elaine,

This is Bruce. You posted on our blog aboput speaking Mandarin. I don't know about the local dialects but it seems that Mandarin is now being taught to the children even in areas where at home they speak Cantonese.

We started with a book and CD from this site and while not perfect it really helped at the beginning. Knowing how to say "don't touch", "be careful", "dangerous" and so on, made life alot easier.

I figure that English and Mandarin are the most used languages in the world now knowing both may open doors you can't even see know.

Take care and safe travels!
